Responsibilities of the Board of County Commissioners:
The Board of County Commissioners is the legislative body that is responsible for developing ordinances (laws) that effect and regulate all facets of local government as it relates to the citizens of Skamania County. The Board also oversees and approves the county's annual budget. Via appointed Department Heads, they manage all other services including Community Events and Recreation, Community Development, Public Works, the Road Department, Community Health, and Senior Services. Each Board member is also assigned to serve on a variety of external boards and commissions as required by law or in furtherance of county goals for the benefit of County citizens.
Once elected, each Commissioner will serve a four-year term and represent the district in which they reside. Below is a map of the county divided into its three districts and each district is determined by population. Board members are partisan and are nominated in a primary election encompassing only their district. In the general election, all county voters are given an opportunity to select whom they would like to serve.
