Divisions of Public Works

WHAT IS THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT?

The Public Works Department consists of 45 dedicated employees responsible for County Roads, Building Permits, 911 Addressing, Solid Waste/Recycling, and management of the County’s Equipment and Vehicle Fleet.

The County’s road system consists of 246 miles of road and 29 bridges. The engineering group and their support staff are responsible for inspecting the roads and bridges for safety. Through a priority planning process, the engineering staff and county road staff develop an annual and six year construction program for road improvement projects. The road maintenance team is responsible for maintaining the exceptional condition of the roads, which we all have grown accustom too. Maintenance includes vegetation control in county right-of ways, chip sealing, replacing culverts, guardrails, and signage. Along, with the yearly maintenance tasks, the maintenance crew performs construction projects. For updates on County Road construction and maintenance projects click the button on the left.

The Building Division of the Public Works Department is responsible for issuing permits and ensuring contractors are staying incompliance with the building codes. The building permit process is a very important step to provide the homeowner with a quality and safe dwelling. Additional responsibilities of the Building Division are to enforce the Fire Code and Dangerous Building Abatement requirements as well as assigning addresses for new residences, linking them to the County’s 911 system. For more information on building requirements and permit applications click the button on the left.

The Solid Waste Division is responsible for collecting and disposing of the county’s solid waste, processing recyclables and informing the public on recycling. For more information on the Solid Waste Division click the button on the left.

The Equipment Rental and Revolving (ER&R) Division is responsible for maintaining all of the County’s 250 pieces of equipment and vehicles. With ever increasing budget constraints, the County is always looking to save taxpayer money through the efficient use of equipment to lower costs.
