SKAMANIA COUNTY COOPERATIVE EXTENSION

Skamania County Firewise Program

Up-Coming Events 2007

BACKGROUND: Skamania, Klickitat, Hood River and Wasco Counties lie in high wildfire risk areas due to high fuel loads, increasing numbers of rural-urban interface dwellers and warm, dry windy weather.

PROJECT GOALS:  This project targets 1) identifying high risk areas using existing fire survey protocol (NFPA 299) compatible with GIS data bases; 2) working with rural volunteer fire districts to identify and remedy equipment and training, and 3) educating rural dwellers in wildfire survivability and damage prevention.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES: are establishing structure for a four-county-wide GIS data base, data collection within identified high-risk areas; data bases describing rural fire districts; increased access to grant funding by rural volunteer fire districts; and increased fire-wise management of rural homes and properties.

The survey data will provide information to emergency planners and responders allowing better identification of fuels mitigation areas and safer response to emergency situations.

Skamania County Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP)

Skamania County has prepared Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP) through a Title III grant from Secure Rural Schools and Self Determination Act.  A CWPP is a plan developed by a community in an area at-risk from wildfire. The Community Wildfire Protection Plan planning process includes collaboration between communities and local, state and federal agencies interested in reducing wildfire risk. CWPP’s can help a community, county, or region to clarify and refine its priorities for life, property, and natural resources in the wildland urban interface (WUI). Each CWPP is different because each plan is specific to the needs of the residents within the project area. Our goal is to provide comprehensive and collaborative plans that will assist Skamania County’s communities, and government agencies, in reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfire within the region. Some possible issues that may be addressed include wildfire response, hazard mitigation, structure and water source protection, education, and community preparedness.
