VOLUNTEERS & LEADERS 4-H PLEDGE
• I pledge my Head to give children the information I can, to help them see things clearly and to make wise decisions.
• I pledge my Heart to encourage and support children no matter whether they have success or disappointments.
• I pledge my Hands to help children's groups; if I cannot be a leader, I can help in many equally important ways.
• I pledge my Health to keep children strong and well for a better world through 4-H, for children's groups, our community, our country, and our world.
COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT
FOR ALL 4-H’ers
Plans are under way to beautify the entrance to the Skamania County Fair. All 4-H clubs looking for a Community Service project, this might be the one you have been waiting for. We will be working along side of the master gardeners, scouts, and other groups in the county, to help build fencing or plant flowers. There are donations from local nurseries for the plants, bark and even some old farm implements to help dress it up. Now the labor is needed to finish it off. Please consider having your club put in some much needed community service.
We may also be able to work this into workday.
Plans are underway now and I will send out more information as it comes available.

Let Take Advantage of the Vintage Years.
VINTAGE CONTESTS
Get a head start on your entries for the 2007 Skamania County Fair. The Sewing, and Cooking Sections in the 4-H department will be offering some new Contests Entries this year at the Skamania County 2007 fair only (this is not a State fair entry).

This year for the Aerospace class, you can checkout “Rockets Away” 4-H 501 or “Model Rocketry” BU-0259. Both are great books with projects that are fun and educational.
The Computer class project information can be purchased through the National 4-H Curricula catalog BU-7509-7511.
If you have trouble finding any of these books, are you would like to look at them before you purchase them, stop by the office and check out the copies on loan.
TIPS FOR FAIR
Veterinarian Tips:
By Monica Townsend
Have recommended Vaccinations.
Sheep & Goat
1. 20 days before fair give intranasal for IBR/PL3, (Name of medication: Nasalgen, Can be purchased on line. Dose ½ of the cattle dose)
2. At lease 1 month (is best) before county fair; give sore mouth (ovine ecthyma) vaccine to all sheep going to state fair.
3. All sheep and goats should be given Covexin 8 or CDT boosters. This is not contagious but could cause death.
Cattle:
1. At least 45-60 days before fair give, IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV Leptos with Hemophilus and a booster at least 15-30 days before fair.
2. All females should be given a Brucellosis vaccine between 4-12 months of age and 4-10 months for Dairy
3. All Cattle need a 7-8 way Clostridial Vaccination to prevent sudden death even if not taken to fair. (These diseases are not contagious)
Don’t bring animals to the fair with open abscesses, foot-rot, or coughing/nasal discharge. These conditions usually are contagious to other animals. With exposure, other people’s animals may get sick or die causing financial loss and emotional distress.
Washing equipment between shared use and not sharing grooming supplies or buckets may be helpful in preventing the spread of disease. Also, using a disinfectant foot dip before going home may help prevent bringing home foot-rot.
Remember if you are especially attached to your animal, there is a risk of death or disease anytime you transport or take the animal to a new and stressful environment with other animals
You must decide if the benefit out weighs the risk.
Before you spray your animal with fly spray, or if you are spraying any other type of sprays or cleaner, please be mindful of those around you. There may be someone in the animal barn or in direct contact with you and your animal that may suffer from allergies, asthma or some type of lung disease. Please give forewarning before spraying and give enough time for someone to leave the area.
Reminder
Posters are due August 4th on Workday. There will be a designated place in the Exhibit Hall for the poster; please put them in the correct spot and group them by age. Do not leave them with a friend or anyone else. It is your responsibility to make sure they are left in the proper place.
Are You Ready To Bring Your Still Life To The Fair?
Do you have your canning labels, photo labels, fashion review forms, etc? If you don’t, stop by the Extension office and pick them up in July.
Expressive Art (Craft) exhibit must be tagged and accompanied by a 3”x 5” card to explain what it is, where it’s to be used, how it was made, and what you learned from creating it. Also for baked goods entries, recipes must be included. (brings these items to the exhibit hall)
Table Setting Contest
Bring a written plan listing theme and menu. Use your own dishes and decorations for your place setting. Tables will be provided. See the Skamania County Fair book for more details. If you have questions, contact Superintendent Charline Wright.
Booths (Display) in
You must sign up for a table; this will help us give you the correct table size for your display. When you are ready to set up, the Department Superintendent will show you where your table is located. You should have a large tri-fold poster for your table, plus other information (pictures) to place on the table. For more information contact Charline Wright, the Exhibit Building Superintendent
What Did I Win Other Than Money?
4-H Champion Ribbon – Receives a trophy (given out at the Achievement Program October 7th)
4-H Blue Ribbon (Excellent) – Meets top standards
4-H Red Ribbon (Good) – One or two major improvements are needed to meet top standards. A red ribbon does not mean a “mediocre” job.
4-H White Ribbon (Fair) – Much improvement is needed to meet top standards. A white ribbon does not mean a “poor” job.
All parents, guardians, 4-H leaders, and 4-H members must wear proper footwear in the barns, while working in the arena, and around the ANIMALS at all times. This is a 4-H program regulation and is for your safety. No sandals or tennis shoes are allowed. If you have questions, please ask the Barn Superintendent
Showmanship Attire Tips
§ Guys and gals, wash your hair.
§ Girls with long hair should tie it back. Bangs should be out of the eyes.
§ Wear closed-toed shoes that stress safety. (Ever had a steer or pig step on your foot in the ring?) Nuff said.
§ Good rule of thumb. If your shirt contains any writing on it at all, other than 4-H emblems, don’t wear it.
§ No one wants to see cleavage, front or rear. Check yourself out in the mirror at home wearing your showmanship duds. Bend over. Is something showing that shouldn’t be? If so, find a different outfit.
§ Your cow may chew its cud, but no kids with chewing gum please!
Showmanship is stressful enough. It’s so much easier to relax and do your best when you’re not worried about hiking up your baggy jeans or pushing your hair out of your eyes. The judge knows what he or she wants to see in the ring. Do yourself a favor, read and follow the guidelines. You have been given the dress code rules, signed and turned it in. Please keep up your end of the agreement. Have fun!
Jackie has lost interest in her chickens so we would like to make them available to 4-Her's. All are pure bred. She has 2 Silver Pencil Rock Hens, 1 Columbian Rock Hen, 1 Old English Self Blue Pullet, 2 Old English Self Blue Cockerels, 2 While Silke Hens, 2 White Silke Roosters, 1 Burchen Silke Rooster, 2 Old English Mottled Cocks, and 2 Columbian Rock Cocks. If you know anyone that might be interested would you please pass our phone number on to them? 360-834-5558 Thank you, Ruth Burketta

Are any of your sewing teens blogging on their sewing projects and writing step by step instructions? Please share and let us know.
I have some links to blogs with instructions for sewing projects. I really think this would be a good way for our sewing teens to show off their projects and share their knowledge of sewing and technology. They would have to know how to write instructions, take good digital pictures and upload them in a size that make viewing of their blog efficient for those on slower connections plus use blog technology which many of them already do.
Be sure to scroll down to find them. Some folks don't keep their blog pages short and on-topic (good practice to follow when blogging).
